Effective time management is a useful skill to learn. Being able to solve your time management issues is crucial to enjoying a stress-free life. Most people have busy lives. Trying to cope with a full-time job, plus a family and social life, is not easy. We have all had days where important appointments have been missed and a family birthday has been forgotten. The trick to avoiding these unfortunate occurrences is effective time management.
The first step to solving the problem is looking at why you fail to manage your time effectively. It might be that you are terrible at saying no to things, or it might be that you get easily sidetracked when tackling tasks and never finish what you start.
A lot of these issues are down to individual personality. This means you can’t change who you are, but hopefully if you are made aware of your short-comings, you can learn to manage them better. By learning a few simple time management skills, you can soon begin to regain some order in your life.
- Get organized! Keep a planner or calendar where you write down every single appointment, plus all the important birthdays and anniversaries.
- Prioritize your jobs. If you have to make a duty call to your elderly mom, make sure you deal with that before you tackle a lesser job. If it helps, make a list at the beginning of the day and tick off tasks that you have completed. That way you are less likely to forget something.
- Never put off doing something unpleasant. By promising yourself that you will do it at some mythical point in the future, you are merely prolonging the agony.
- Don’t double-book yourself. Always check your diary before agreeing to be somewhere. You cannot be in two places at once—it is physically impossible.
- Make a note of your activities over a week and make sure you have a good balance of work and personal life. If you are putting way too many hours in at the office, see if there is anything you can do to change that. Alternatively, if you are rolling in late to work most days due to heavy partying, it is probably a good idea to curtail your social life before you are sacked.
By becoming more skilled at effective time management, you will soon begin to notice a difference in your everyday life.
